SAMPSON & YOUNG DORMITORY RENOVATION
Designed in 1927 and 1937, and closed in 2003, Florida A&M University sought a firm to renovate the Sampson and Young Dormitories. Preserving the rich historical character and classical exterior detailing was a priority for us.
The renovation focused on modernizing the dorm’s sleeping and residential quarters and adding new furnishings and amenities. The interiors were gutted and each dorm room was designed to match the needs of today’s students.
Through this project, we added 208 beds back to the campus, with one and two-bedroom units provided, as well as a mix of social spaces and amenities including lounges, public restrooms, kitchenettes, and laundry. To meet today’s ADA standards and life safety requirements, new elevator lobbies were placed to complement the architectural characteristics of each building.
The redesigned dormitories provide students with space to rest, study, and socialize in a safe environment while retaining the history of each building.
