HOLMES-HUNTER HISTORIC RENOVATION
The historic Holmes-Hunter Academic Building was built in increments starting with the south wing in 1831. The north wing was built in 1860. Throughout the years, small remodels were completed including an open-air courtyard between structures, that was later infilled to bridge the two buildings. In 2001, the building was named in honor of Hamilton Holmes and Charlayne Hunter, the first African American students to enroll in classes at UGA in 1961.
To bring this building up to current code, the 40,000 SF building is being renovated to create accessibility to all floors with the addition of an elevator, new MEP systems, additional stairwells, and a complete renovation to the interior to achieve programmatic efficiency. The courtyard is also being restored.
During selective demolition, a mural was found hidden underneath the plaster on the wall. Conservationists were brought in to explore and evaluate options for preservation.
